Good Luck, Jim. VGA can only be used to transmitting graphics. COM ports use different voltages, pins, and layout. I do not understand how any data equipment can be connected to a port that is routed directly to the graphics card. You would be much better off following the advice of foogoo and getting an adapter. Yes; yes they were. I think I have read about the reason at some point in the past, but cannot remember it now. VGA added intermediate voltages to represent more color depth, dropped "intensity", added some ground wires to reduce noise, but the monitors worked very similarly.
