Welcome to our community! I've heard from a few of the experts here on EE that there is a way to make Windows XP run a software based Raid system. I've searched on the net, and I've been unable to find any information about it. I've found lots of third party software to accomplish such things, but nothing about using Windows alone to manage this.
I'm not necessarily going to use it, but I know lots of people that would benefit from this. So what I'm looking for, is maybe some links to sites explaining how to do it, and maybe a link to a list of pros and cons over a hardware raid of the corresponding types.
Just some details so that I can read up on it and try it out on one of my machines to compare it to my hardware raid. Thanks, I think this might bennefit several people here. I recently installed Windows XP on a system with two hard drives, intending to use the drives as mirrors.
I then found out, much to my surprise, that mirroring is not enabled in Windows XP, not even in the so-called "professional"? Fortunately, it appears that this is one of those features that are actually present in the operating system, only disabled.
The bottom line is that you need to hand-edit three binary system files and then install them even if Windows insists on "repairing" them by replacing your copies with the original versions. The three files to edit are dmadmin. The first two of these are in the system32 directory, while dmboot.
Here are the changes that need to be made I use the elvis editor under Linux, which allows me to edit binary files. Viewed 24k times. I have nothing but bad experiences in using built in raid controller. Is there a possibility to use the software raid features of windows in Windows XP? Improve this question. Add a comment. In this guide we going to use Raid 1 Mirror. Once you select the raid your ready to built. Sometime gave you option to built quick. You can but how can you be sure if the drives are good. As you can see it building already. It may take hours to finish mirror the drive. You can start installing Windows. Just exit out of the configure. Now have your Windows cd and Floppy disk ready.
